Something email has that the others lack is a measure of privacy. I know it's possible send private messages on the social platforms, but it's kind of like hitting the Lunch/Launch button. Too many of my FB contacts have accidentally published private information to walls. A friend of mine didn't understand the platform and published embarrassing responses to her friend’s wall. Her face turned grey when we explained how it worked. This is not to say that people haven't made horrific public mistakes with email, but in my opinion, it is less susceptible to that particular danger than the social platforms. I agree, especially about the chronological record.
